Olà Lisboa: General Assembly 2019 hosted by SIC
2019’s edition of the ENEX General Assembly was hosted by SIC Portugal in the beautiful city of Lisbon. For the last three meetings, ENEX has been fortunate to have the participating country’s President address the meeting. Lisbon was no exception as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to the conference about the many challenges affecting Europe in the years ahead.
As always, the latest trends in broadcast and digital industry were also discussed. The rise of Podcasting was investigated by Christian Schalt, RTL Radio’s Chief Digital Officer. In an age of short attention spans, even younger audiences are consuming longer and serious audio content. Richard Miron, Founder of Earshot Strategies said Podcasting appealed to the age-old tradition of oral storytelling.
Increasingly news is consumed online and on social platforms. This presents new challenges for newsrooms to craft their video stories to fit Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram. Sue Llewelyn from Ultra Social gave the audience illustrations of best practice including demographic data which showed how popular Instagram is amongst younger and female consumers.
Venelin Petkov showcased bTV Bulgaria’s impressive new multi-functional studio installation while Sarah Whitehead, Deputy Head of Newsgathering for Sky News UK, was questioned on the role of campaigning journalism following Sky’s trail-blazing campaign against ocean plastic pollution.
Jeremy Thompson, Executive Vice President of Huawei Europe presented the transformative technology of 5G which is already been deployed in many European countries. For newsgatherers it should mean an end to bandwidth congestion for news teams using bonded cellular units.
The finale of the meeting was a series of announcements about where ENEX meets next: the Coordinators Meeting will be in Belgrade in March, Technical leaders meet in Salzburg in June and the next General Assembly will be held in Willemstad in October 2020. (…not sure? Google it).
