Partnership agreement with DELFI, a leading digital publisher in the Baltic states

Enex has signed a new partnership agreement with DELFI, a leading digital publisher in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.  The Baltic States have been a long-standing target for Enex expansion.

Enex is now represented in 26 of the EU’s 27 member states with only Malta remaining as a missing component. DELFI operates in each of the Baltic languages and with an accompanying Russian language service.

Enex members exchange news content across the group and receive additional news content from the news provider’s newsroom in RTL City Luxembourg.

ENEX held its latest Editorial Meeting in Cologne, Germany

ENEX is an association of the world’s leading commercial TV broadcasters with a collaborative approach: members share content and resources to provide each other with trusted and verified news. This is particularly useful during breaking news situations, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine. On Thursday 9 June and Friday 10 June, ENEX members travelled to RTL Deutschland’s main location in Cologne, Germany, to meet each other face-to-face and exchange on key topics.

“The core of ENEX is networking and collaboration”

The Editorial Committee Meeting was opened by Sonja Schwetje, Editor-in-Chief at NTV and RTL News and Chair of the Board of Enex. Sonja welcomed the attendees to RTL Deutschland and praised all members for remaining close to their audiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. She also mentioned the ongoing war in Ukraine, in which Enex and its members are doing their best to fight disinformation, uphold independent journalism and maintain media coverage in Ukraine.

“Video material is the lifeblood of Enex”

The meeting continued with a welcome and editorial update from Mark Evans, Head of News at ENEX. Mark covered the latest trends and developments since the last editorial meeting in Belgrade, which took place over two years ago.

Thanks to Donald Trump, 2019 was a highlight year for ENEX in terms of editorial content, with the upward trend of “hits over time” (when a partner uses content) continuing into 2021. Clear peaks could be seen for the Covid-19 pandemic, with a total of 2,300 stories published in April 2020, followed by further peaks for the US election and Russian invasion. The most popular videos between March 2020 and May 2022 were from hospitals in Bergamo at the beginning of the pandemic, provided by Sky UK, followed by footage of a baby being rescued in Beirut, also provided by Sky UK, and a massive explosion in Beirut, sourced by ENEX.

ENEX provides its members with two types of content: content from other partners, and content which is sourced directly by ENEX news editors. Using the Russian invasion as an example, Mark showed a moving video with footage from Ukraine – showing stories which would have otherwise remained untold. After sourcing and seeking permission to share the video, ENEX verifies the information to check it is true and accurate. The content is then published for all Enex members to use on their news channels.

ENEX Expands Further in the Middle East

As the Middle East again dominates the news agenda ENEX, has announced a series of further partnerships in the region. The expansion comes in three parts: a major agreement has been reached with a leading pan-Arab news agency to supply content, a new Jordanian television channel joins and, for the first time ever, ENEX will take on a wholly print and digital entity from Egypt into the group.

Arab 24, is headquartered in Amman, Jordan and is a leading independent Middle East and North Africa news-gathering agency covering key events and breaking news. Founded in 2015 the agency has rapidly expanded during a tumultuous period of news events in the region.  Adrian Wells, Managing Director of ENEX, said, ‘’Partnering with Arab 24 adds a new level to ENEX’s coverage of the MENA region. Arab 24 has on-the-ground expertise in some of the most difficult places to report in the world and we are delighted to bring their content to our members and work closely to grow our collaboration further.’’

Shadia Ajlouni, the Istanbul-based Regional Operations Manager for Arab 24 welcomed the move saying: ‘’The Arabic speaking region is characterized by unique political, social, cultural and linguistic nuances. Arab 24 has built keen competency in understanding this environment to bring to viewers across the globe a comprehensive picture of vital headline news stories and those that are otherwise overlooked, ignored or misrepresented. Our partnership with ENEX will enhance this even further.’’  The agency has fully equipped production teams in all the key regional capital cities and news hotspots and an office in Washington DC.

Al Ordon Al Yoom (Jordan Today)

ENEX’s global membership base now reaches 56 with the latest signing of Al Ordon Al Yoom (Jordan Today), one of Jordan’s leading commercial news channels. ENEX now has five Middle Eastern partners and talks on-going with a number of others.

The Middle East expansion follows similar regional growth in Latin America and Asia. ENEX has news editors based in Bogota, Colombia and Sydney Australia and has ambitions to locate a news editor in the Middle East to coordinate news activities.

Hamza Attar

The latest agreements were negotiated by ENEX’s MENA Operations Manager Hamza Attar who has previously worked in Egypt, Gaza and the United Arab Emirates.

ENEX has also reached outline agreement with the leading privately owned Egyptian newspaper and digital entity Al Masry Al Youm (The Egyptian Today). The newspaper is rapidly developing its digital edition and seeking to incorporate more video into its offer.

Enex has traditionally partnered with commercial broadcasters but this latest negotiation signals a move to broaden ENEX membership not just geographically but to other types of media entities.
